I can't believe it has been over a year since my last post. Where has the time gone?! I have done many events with my mobile boutique and it's been a learning curve, to say the least.
~I've learned how to set up the truck a bit more efficiently, although it still takes me a long time (just in a different way than my indoor setups). ~I've learned that because my displays & shelving are bolted down so everything stays in place, it's hard to get creative with my setup. I like to try different display options and sometimes that can be a challenge when things can't be moved. I have to be more creative in merchandising my PRODUCT with the I have to work with. Sometimes it feels like it always looks the same. It's not like setting up a booth where you can rearrange your tables and displays differently each time. ~I've learned that the wind is STILL not my friend, even in a truck. Anything I put outside my truck will STILL blow over in the wind, so I've had to upgrade some of my displays to more heavy duty stuff. ~I've learned that gas is very expensive and you find that out quickly when the gas pump shuts off automatically at $95.00 and the gas attendant asks if you want him to keep filling it up! Lol! ~I've learned that no matter how many signs or banners you have outside, people STILL don't understand that they can come INSIDE to shop. Lots of people just peek in from the bottom of the steps and just keep walking. It's one of my biggest challenges. ~I've learned that having an air conditioner is a MUST...even in Oregon. It gets HOT inside that box!\ ~I've learned that there will be lots of challenges when parking a truck this size when attending events and to ALWAYS check ahead of time with the event coordinator to make sure you are on a level surface. ~I've learned that people will come in and tell you how much they love the truck and the concept of the truck, but will not always buy from you, and that's ok. They love the business model, and even if they aren't purchasing from you, they are intrigued by your business and they will tell their friends! ~I've learned that some events will cost more because of the size of the truck so I've had to pass on them, and some events offer a price break just to have me at their event! ~I've learned that during the winter months when there are no outdoor events available to sell at, I can always do Facebook Live videos from inside the truck while the truck is parked at home. My customers love being able to shop from inside the truck that way! There's never a time when you CAN'T be selling your merchandise! Having my Mobile Boutique has been so much fun over the past year and I can't wait to see where the next year takes me! I've included pictures of some different events I've done this past year. Enjoy!

In between events, we are taking the opportunity to make little improvements here & there. Today we painted the wheels of the truck PINK using Plasti Dip paint. It’s a peelable auto paint that is super cool! You can paint just about any part of your car with it and it’s not permanent. You can even paint the interior too! Call me crazy but I want to paint my dashboard pink! Lol! To find out more about this awesome product, go to www.dipyourcar.com. It's cool stuff! We decided to paint the wheels because they were just ugly, white, chipped and rusty and 3 cans of $10 spray paint is WAY cheaper than buying new wheels! I love the way they turned out! We did the wheels on our car too!
This weekend was my first event with my Paparazzi truck! I'm not gonna lie...it was kinda intimidating driving the truck and setting it all up by myself because my Husband has always been there to help, but I did it! This event has thrown just about everything imaginable at me. We battled all kinds of crazy weather over the weekend but still did really well! It started out ok and then for the better part of the Saturday we had a torrential downpour. You can see in the pictures that we had flooding. They had to bring in sandbags because the street flooded and Public Works had to come in to drain the lake in the parking lot! Then the sun came out for a little while and the wind picked up. The blue canopy in the second video took a tumble across the parking lot a few minutes after I recorded it! Oh yeah...and we can't forget about the thunder! Lol!
The weather on the second day was much more cooperative, however, the other outdoor vendor that was set up near me didn’t show up the second day so that left me & my truck all alone in a parking lot way away from all of the inside vendors and food court. The event coordinator decided to move me closer to the food vendors so I had to close up the truck in order to drive it around to my new spot. It wasn’t much better of a spot, but at least it didn’t look like I was just a truck parked in the parking lot all by itself! Sales were much slower on Sunday, but it was also Mother’s Day so I didn’t expect too much that day. Because it was slower, I was able to chat with people more as they came in to check it out and see what the truck was all about. I love seeing the look of amazement on their faces when they walk in and see what we’ve done with it! Makes me proud knowing that my Husband did such a fabulous job building it! It was a wild weekend…especially for my first event, but all in all, everyone LOVED the truck and sales were great...despite the weather! Mother Nature can't stop me now! Lol! Well we finally have our Grand Opening under our belt now and Bedazzle Me Pretty Mobile Fashion Boutique is officially open for business! Our first time out went well for sales, but was really lacking in shoppers. Unfortunately, we were pretty rushed with the date of our opening because of the time it took to get everything finished. We had a paid event scheduled for the next weekend so we had only ONE date available! That left us less than 2 weeks to advertise and plan our celebration but that’s ok. For those that did stop and shop, it was a fun experience for them, everyone loved the truck and sales were still good!
Having a slow opening day was probably a blessing in disguise. It allowed us to get the truck set up and learn as we go, especially since it was our first time out with it. We had some downtime to be able to find things that worked well and find things we could improve on. I would much rather find these things out during a slow day than have something happen at a busy event. :) Now, we can look forward to our first event with the truck next weekend and be much more prepared! What a difference it makes to have a winch installed on that heavy porch! It took 2 of us to lift it up before and we could BARELY do that and now it’s just a push of a button. It’s awesome! We also had a generator box built to house the generator. It just slides out and it’s also just a push of a button to start it up. I LOVE when things are easy! Nothing else has been easy on this project! Now we are able to start planning for our Grand Opening celebration! I am beyond excited!
We took our first road trip to drop of the truck to the new fabricator today. He is going to build us a generator box, finish the hand rails and install the winch for us! Yay! He says he can have it back to us on SUNDAY! Holy cow! ONE weekend and he will be done with it! It’s been a long time coming to get this part of the project finished and I’m so excited to finally get to this point.
On the trip into town (mind you our trip into town is 45 minutes each way), my Husband drove the truck and I followed in the car since we were leaving the truck there for the weekend. It was a great opportunity to see firsthand all the looks that the truck got as it drove down the road. It is definitely eye-catching and a rolling billboard for sure! I love it! After the fabricator cancelled on us AGAIN, my Husband called another guy and he came out today to look at the truck and see if he could help us finish this job. He said he could definitely help us…for $1,300! We have no choice now but to pay to have someone else finish the job that our original fabricator did not complete. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you hire someone that doesn't have a shop to work out of and doesn't do this for a living. We are at the mercy of the weather and his work schedule. Finishing this job is not a priority to anyone else but us so we need to move on and find someone else to finish the job. Every day that passes is another day that we could be open for business. We have got to get this finished! I sure hope this new guy comes through for us. We are scheduled to drop the truck off with him next week and he said he could get it done in one weekend...not 2 months!
Today is April 3rd. The last time the fabricator was out here to fix the awning that was damaged was back on February 14th. It's been almost 2 months and I've received MULTIPLE cancellation texts from him over that time promising he will be out the next week or the next couple of week and so on. The last text I got from him was on March 20th saying that he wouldn’t make it out again until April 3rd! It is now April 3rd. No fabricator. No handrails. No winch. No hope of opening in April. I'm starting to think that we just need to find someone else to take over the job. Unbelievable.
The vinyl guy came out today to install the graphics on the truck. I’m so excited! It turned out so awesome! Better than I had hoped for! We now have a rolling billboard and you definitely cannot miss it! Lol! We are so close to finishing this truck that I can hardly stand it.
Oh yeah…did I mention (again) that the fabricator has STILL not been back out to finish the handrails and install the winch? We are literally waiting on nothing else but that. I’ve given up my hopes of opening in March and now I’ve given up my hopes of opening up in April now too. He is supposed to come out on April 3rd to finish his part so we will see. We have had a few days of nice weather lately too and of course he’s unavailable those days. PLEASE don’t rain on Monday! PLEASE don’t rain on Monday! The Designer I chose on Fiverr.com initially came up with a great design idea, but oh.my.gosh. I submitted images, font styles, virtually everything she needed to just lay out the design and she kept coming back with something totally different than what I asked for. Ugh. After 3 days of messaging back & forth, I finally told her to just finalize the order. It wasn’t perfect but it was close enough (finally) to what I wanted. Larry & I just got home from the hospital and I needed to focus on him so I just wanted this done. I had the vinyl guy waiting to get the file for my design so he can cut and install it on the truck. After we finally settled on the design, I sent the files over to him and he told me they weren’t vector files, which is what I paid to have done. So I had to message the designer AGAIN and she ended up charging me another $40 for the source files! Plus every message I got from her, she would solicit a tip! That was such a huge turn off for me! So…word to the wise. If you decide to use Fiverr.com for any reason, be aware that they will solicit for tips and also make sure you know EXACTLY what you are getting BEFORE placing the order with them. This website is wonderful, BUT…not all sellers on there are created equal. After submitting the design to the vinyl guy, he found that the source files were STILL not in vector format so he ended up having to recreate everything, but he was awesome! He actually fixed all the little things that I ended up settling on with the original designer because I was just not getting through to her with what I wanted. He fixed everything and made it perfect! We have him scheduled for the 31st to install them now! Whoo hoo! Finally! The sides of the truck: The back of the truck:
Now that I know the Graphic Designer is not able to help me with my project, it’s time to find another one who can create a design for my truck. The first guy was very helpful in recoloring the image I wanted to use but I still need a design for the graphic he created. My Husband had surgery today to remove a tumor from his lung so I will be staying with him in the hospital for a few days, so that will give me some time to search for someone new. I brought my laptop with me and am working from the hospital room while he’s recovering.
I decided to look for a Graphic Designer on Fiverr.com. I’ve heard of others using the website with pretty good success so I thought I’d put my project out there and see what offers I could get. If you don’t know what Fiverr.com is, I’ll explain. Fiverr is a global online marketplace offering tasks and services, beginning at a cost of $5 per job performed (from which it gets its name). The site is primarily used by freelancers who use Fiverr to offer services to customers worldwide. You can post your project, whether you are looking for a drawing, illustration, logo design, company name ideas, business card design, content writing, pretty much anything you need, and professional freelancers will submit an offer with the dollar amount of what they are willing to do the job for. Then you can either accept the offer or decline it. It’s a great way to get professional services at a fraction of the cost. And anywhere we can save money is a great thing! So I posted my project earlier today and I received 7 offers ranging from $35 to $250! I decided to go with a lady that offered to do it for $75. I think that’s a great price for a custom design! I gave her the specifics and after a couple of messages back & forth, she came up with a great design IDEA! I loved it but it needed some tweeks so we are continuing to go back and forth through messages to try to get just the look I want. After all, this will be my rolling billboard so it HAS to be perfect! We shall see what the final result will be Ugh…I just can’t seem to catch a break! After emailing back & forth with the Graphic Designer for a month, we finally came to the decision that he just doesn’t have time for a side job like mine so he is going to pass on the project. So…back to the drawing board…AGAIN. I understand people are busy, but I also have a timeline that I am trying to manage and I keep setting dates of when I want to be open and because I have to wait on this person or that person, my timeline keeps passing by, month after month after month. It’s very deflating. :(
Oh…and did I mention that I’m STILL waiting on the fabricator to come back and finish the handrails and install the winch? Now he won’t have another day off until April 3rd! Another 3 weeks! Looks like I won’t be opening in April now either. This is just insane. So between the weather and the Fabricators work schedule, it’s been 3 weeks since he was out here to fix the awning and we are still waiting for him to install the handrails, hydraulic supports for the awning and the winch (so this thing is can even be driven). So much for being open in March. :(
Last week we had a heck of a wind storm that damaged the awning on our truck so the fabricator came out yesterday to rebuild a new awning out of metal instead of wood this time. He got the awning done, but the hydraulic supports to help support the weight were not large enough so he has to come back out again to finish installing those. He is also going to fix the hand rails to make them a bit sturdier and when he comes back out to install those, he will also install a winch to help with the weight of the porch. Hopefully he will be out to finish it all up next week.
After weeks of tormenting myself with trying to decide which image to use for the graphics on my truck, I think I finally made up my mind...I think! I found a Graphic Designer to recolor the image that I plan to use and I think it turned out really great so he has agreed to design the entire layout for me. He is the Editor & Graphic Designer for a business magazine in Salem so I think he will do a great job coming up with an overall design for the truck. I want it to be fun & whimsical and not too serious. After all, I sell $5.00 jewelry! I don’t want people to be afraid to come in and shop for fear that they can’t afford my product. He is on deadline for the magazine right now so it will be another week or so before he can start work on it, but I can’t wait to see what he comes up with! Then it’s off to the decal guy!
Well my truck passed the driving test so now it’s time for the fun part! Adding jewelry! Sara, one of my team members, and her daughters came over today to help set the pegs and the layout of the jewelry. It sounds like an easy task but it really isn’t! After planning how we would color block 16 different colors in 12ft of space, we began putting in the pegs. As we worked on a layout, we ran into the problem of hitting the wall studs with the pegs. Since we could only go up or down so much to fit all the different styles of jewelry (earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.), we had to start over and move all the pegs up one peg hole. Once again, we started putting in the pegs. Then we ran into another stud and had to start over again after rearranging the layout…again. Like I said…it sounds like an easy task, but it’s not! It’s hard to get so much jewelry into this much space and be able display all colors and all styles! Despite the 15 times we redid the pegs, we finally got it set and look how cool it looks! Right now, I have only one of each color & style to set the layout, but soon enough this truck will be full of THOUSANDS of pieces of $5.00 jewelry! It’s a Paparazzi addict’s dream come true! Lol!
Well after many weeks of us working on the inside (by us, I mean my Husband…lol!), we are finally done with the build out! We added the trim to the cabinets so that it looks like one unit, we finished the checkout counter and even replaced the outlet covers with brushed nickel ones to match the light fixtures.
Larry finished everything off by bolting and securing all of the furniture in place so it is ready to go! Now for a test drive to make sure none of the walls fall off! We are still waiting for the fabricator to install a winch system because the porch is extremely heavy to lift, even with the 2 of us, but we got it up and latched into place for our first test drive. We drove it down the road, over bumps and around curves and corners everything remained in place! Yay! I figure if it can withstand my driving and everything is still intact…we are good to GO! We are getting so close to being done with the inside! Larry is working on refinishing the checkout counter now. We decided to cover it with the same paneling we used on the walls. The gray looks great against the white pegboard. He is also building a custom top for it so after cutting out a pattern with some old plywood, we went BACK to Lowe's to buy good quality plywood to make the custom top. (People are going to think we live there…lol!). I wish we didn’t have to buy an entire 4ftx 8ft sheet of it because it was quite expensive, but it was worth it I guess.
So because he is creating a customer top, naturally he needs ANOTHER new tool to do the job…lol. He bought himself a new router to finish the edges of the counter top and I think it made all the difference in the world. It just looks finished with the decorative rounded edges. Boy what a mess that made though! I had to put up a tarp just to keep the majority of the dust it created from covering the entire inside of the truck! I decided to paint the counter top white to offset the gray and pink but I still need to add a protective clear coat to the top so it doesn’t get scuffed up. He also added a little white trim on the corners and then we laid contact paper to the top of the original counter to give it a marble look. I love faux finishes! It gives the luxury look without breaking the bank! I think it looks wonderful! Ugh…ANOTHER setback! We had a really bad windstorm last night and in the middle of the night, it ripped the awning up and tore the hinges off the awning. :( We can get gusts of up to 90mph out here on the Oregon Coast and if it’s not tied down, it won’t survive some of the winds we have out here. I guess we should have dropped the awning, but we thought it was heavy enough that it wouldn’t go anywhere. Guess we thought wrong! So now we have to have the fabricator come out and replace the awning. It was made of wood so we are going to have him make the new one out of metal instead. It will be heavier but sturdier.
Am I ever gonna get this thing on the road? Now that the walls are up, it’s time to paint and add the trim! I decided to paint the trim pink to add a splash of color to the stark white walls of the pegboard. It looks great against the gray walls too and just gives it a little interest. Since Paparazzi’s colors are pink & black, I had to incorporate the pink in there somehow!
Since the truck isn’t perfectly square, some of the wall panels didn’t quite line up perfectly so the trim will hide any imperfect edges so it is playing a dual role in the design of the truck. However, the trim has proven to be much more difficult to install than we anticipated. There are a lot of pieces and a lot of angle cuts to make to make it fit into the corners. It took a LOT of thinking and planning on how to install it. Of course Larry “needed’ a new nail gun to hang the trim so he got to play with his new toy while installing it. But hey…whatever it takes to make him happy while doing all this work! J And I have to admit, that new toy of his REALLY saved us a lot of time! It was well worth the money. After a few miss-cut trim boards later, and a couple more trips to Lowes for new boards, we finally got all the trim hung. A couple of boards were cut at the wrong angle here or there, but all in all, it turned out pretty good! I also found my chandelier and Larry installed it for me. I love it. I love the light pattern that it gives off and it looks just fancy enough but not too fancy! It was kitty approved! Whoo hoo! We have lights! Larry installed the track lights today and they look great! We went with 6’ lights to cover the majority of the merchandising space in the truck. The lights can be positioned to highlight areas as needed so they should supply enough light for everything. I am still trying to decide on a chandelier for the center light. I want something pretty but not too fancy.
I can’t believe how expensive lights are! Holy cow! The darn track lights were $135 EACH! Chandeliers are close to $100 for a small one and they just go up from there. Thankfully, I only need a small one because of the space I have to work with so we should be able to go with a less expensive one. I have to make sure it doesn’t hang too low because the ceilings are not very high in the truck. I sure don’t want people bumping their heads on my pretty lights! My Husband was a working machine this week! He got all of the walls put up AND he built all of the furniture too! Look how great these shelves look! He’s doing such an awesome job with this project. For a man with NO experience in this type of work, he is doing great. It hasn’t been without struggles, but he’s getting it figured out. Although he STILL hasn’t watched any YouTube videos! Lol!
So, with such a small amount of room to work with inside the truck, we need to utilize all the space we can so I decided to buy these large drawers from IKEA and use them as pedestals for my shelving unit. I am going to need storage for overstock items and display items and these are huge! It was difficult to find latches to mount to the drawers to keep them from coming open because the drawers are not flush with the top of the unit, so we went with baby latches inside the drawers. That way they are out of sight and won’t open as I’m driving. When I first started planning my layout, I was looking for closet organizers and wall units for my shelving. I couldn’t find anything for a reasonable price or that had large drawers so I decided I would have to create my own wall unit. After buying the pedestal drawers, I found two 4-shelf bookcases and an 8ft laminate board for the top. We will add a piece of molding to the front on the top of the unit to tie it all together. The molding will hide the shelf that will be mounted to the top of the bookcases so it will look like one large wall unit. This week was a pretty productive week for the build out of the inside of the truck. The Electrician was out to finish the wiring and while he was there, he helped Larry hang the slatwall panels and pegboard so we now have walls! They figured out what type of screws to use, and go figure…it wasn’t ANY of the screws we bought at Lowe's! They ended up using masonry screws that the Electrician had on hand. So much for that wasted hour starring at screws in the screw isle at Lowes!
We decided that because the slatwall was so heavy and we really didn’t need slatwall to go to the bottom of the floor that we would use the gray paneling and I am so glad we did. It looks so awesome! I love the way it turned out. I think it adds a little visual interest and we aren’t going to hang merchandise on the floor anyway. The panels were much cheaper than slatwall too so that helped save us a few coins. J Well it’s starting to shape up nicely. Can’t wait to see what else we (by we, I mean my Husband) get accomplished this week! Well it took a few more weeks to get the Electrician on the schedule, but we finally got him out here to work on the truck! He has all the wiring done and just needs to hook up the light fixtures and switches and we should have lights!
Yesterday we picked up the rest of the wall panels and 1x2's (I have to say that I think I love the gray paneling we got. I think it's gonna look great along with the gray slatwall!). Now that we had everything we needed, my Husband and I got to work on installing the wall and ceiling panels (what I really mean is my Husband is working and I am handing him screws or holding panels in place…lol). We worked in the truck all day today and it was quite a frustrating day, to say the least. We had to get the framework up to attach the panels to in order for the Electrician to finish installing the outlets and we were having trouble trying to figure out how to attach the 1x2’s to the metal ribs of the truck. It was quite a struggle. We were using self-drilling metal screws and they were just stripping the metal. There was no way this was going to hold pegboard, let alone that heavy slatwall! Usually we would have studs to screw into, but in a truck, we don’t have that. We have to create our own “studs” to have something to hang the walls on and it just wasn’t working out. We got the ceiling studs in but the metal on the walls of the truck was too thin. There was nothing for the screws to grip to. We clearly had the wrong type of screws so back to Lowe’s we went. Have you ever been to the nail & screw isle at a hardware store? I mean seriously…is there really a need for THAT many different types of screws? Well I can tell you after this project that YES, YES there is! Because clearly not every screw is created equal and there is a different one for every job you do! After spending an hour staring at screws at Lowe’s, we finally walked out of there with 3 boxes of screws…all different than the other. We had no idea which ones to get so we bought them all. Lol! I asked a sales associate which ones to get but he had no idea. Not many people seem to understand the concept of building a store inside a truck. It’s quite a challenge because although you are essentially building a room just like you would in a home, the structure is different and it poses many different challenges…like not having studs to work with. :) Once we got home from Lowe’s, it was already dark and since we still don’t have lights yet, our work for the day was done. This was probably a good thing because I’d like to stay married and if I had to work out there with my Husband much longer, we may not be married for long! I love the man to death but he does NOT like to ask for help or directions or anything that could HELP him and he was driving me crazy! My philosophy is if you don’t know something…ASK! His philosophy is if you don’t know something…ponder it and stress out about it and mull it over until you still can’t figure it out! Ugh…men! I just don’t get them. Isn't that what YouTube is for??? |
